Q: How do you know that the chair you are purchasing is safe and durable?

Answer: In many cases, it is impossible to tell. However, manufacturers of business and institutional furniture, through their trade association, BIFMA, and in partnership with ANSI, have developed specific safety and performance standards. These standards provide manufacturers, specifiers and users with important guidelines for evaluating the safety, durability and structural adequacy of the products tested. They define a specific series of tests, the laboratory equipment to be used, the conditions of the test and the acceptance levels to be used in evaluating the products. All chairs from PCchairs meet or exceed these standards.

Q: What are the applicable ANSI/BIFMA tests that all PCchairs surpass?

Answers:

Forward Stability Test.
Record the weight of the chair. With a one inch chock in front of the forward glides, legs or casters, apply a downward force at 45 degrees by attaching a strap to the seat. No less than 40% of the weight of the chair should be needed to tip the chair forward.
Backward Stability Test.
With a one inch chock behind the rear glides, legs or casters, and a 173 lb. (73 kg.) weight placed on the seat and strapped to the back, no less than 20 lbs. of pressure should be required to tip the chair back. This is designed to place the center of gravity in approximately the same location as would occur if a 173 lb. male were to sit in the chair.
Base Test.
With glides and casters removed, apply a 2,500 lbf.* load on top of the chair base for one minute, then remove. No structural breakage or loss of serviceability should have occurred.
Drop Test.
Suspend a 225 lb., 16″ diameter weight 6″ from the center of the seat. Drop the weight, then remove. No structural breakage or loss of serviceability should have occurred.
Swivel Cycling Test.
For swivel chairs only. Place a 225 lb. wieght on the seat of the chair. Position the centerline of the weight 2″ forward of the centerline of the spindle of the chair base. Rotate for 120,000 cycles at approximately six revolutions per minute. No structural breakage or loss of serviceability should occur.
Seating Impact Test.
Suspend a 125 lb., 16″ diameter weight 2″ from the center of the seat. Drop the weight 100,000 repetitions at a rate of approximately 20 repetitions per minute. No structural breakage or loss of serviceability should occur.
Caster Durability Test.
Apply a 300 lb. weight to the chair base with casters. Push base along a 30″ distance. If the casters have hard treads, push the base at a rate of 100,000 cycles. If the casters have soft treads, the rate should be 36,000 cycles. At the conclusion of the test, place a 5 lbf.* load at the centerline of each caster stem. No structural breakage or loss of serviceability should occur.
